Pay It Forward

My friend Maleen is having a fun little game on her blog. I'm playing along. So this is how it works..... The first 3 people to leave a comment on this (my) post will receive a hand made gift from me during this year. When and what will be a surprise. There's a small catch...You knew there would be didn't you? Post this on your blog then come back and leave a comment, telling me you're in. Fun, huh? Remember, only the first 3 comments receive the gift.

Picking up hitch hikers...sort of

Well, I was driving home from the coast last night and it was snowing and icy and all that jazz. We were barely moving IMHO at like 40 and I was hanging really tight to a semi for a lot of reasons. Bright lights, wide wheels and those guys usually know what's up. But, we got to an area where there was a pull off and I could see this person walking around in the snow and trying to wave people down. I pulled over (I was already in uniform) and feeling a bit like paying it forward. This girl explains that this is her 2nd flat of the day and her spare is already in use. Neither of us has cell service and I say, climb in and I'll give you a ride to the nearest house or until we get service.

I tell her I work for the Boy Scouts and that I hope that makes her feel at least a little more comfrotable getting into the car with a stranger. She says, oh, my dad was a cub master. They live in Alaska, yadda yadda. I tell her there is a little shop up the way - oh wait.

[First I have to tell you that I NEVER, ok, maybe in 3.5 years have only driven Hwy 6 to Hwy 26 3 times from Tillamook home. I had decided to go to my parentals and then into PDX to clear disrcrepancies on Wed. otherwise, I never would've been on that road.]

Back to the meatier stuff - I say, oh, that's so great about her dad being a CM. Then just as we're pulling up the house/store, she says, yeah, they are LDS. I say, oh, I am too and smiled. She reeked of cigarette smoke and lived with her boyfriend but I could tell she was relieved that it was me who was there to help her. I hope she was having a prayer answered and that she would share this with her parents who are probably hoping that she'll have some sort of crisis to bring her around again. She made the call and the store owners said she could wait for the tow there so I left but I just hope that she felt a little comfort in meeting me and that maybe, just maybe, I was an answer to someone's prayers.

Have a great day all.

Shooting, SHooting, Every where...

Oh, I've been looking forward to this day for SOOOOO long! I got some firearms, forever more known as "guns" but I don't belong to a shooting club or range and I live in town (albeit population 1500) so I couldn't shoot them for like 2 months. Finally I had a few hours and set up a time to go shoot out at my friends property in Yamhill. Funny thing is, she had us shooting against a dirt backdrop but it wasn't really very high and I had never shot my handgun before so we were all over the place the first few times. The neighbor called them (ok, he's like 1000 yards away) but said he was dodging bullets. I thought it was too close but hey, not my house, lol.

Anyway, we moved it away from there, down a hill into what they affectionately call the "pit" or their personal dump, lol. I hope I'm not getting anyone in trouble here. They live on tons of acerage (it's just all hilled/valleyed). We had so much fun. It was like 4 of us sometimes and then Jody came out and wow, who knew she was such a good shot.

I took the scope off my riffle and hit every single time. Hand gun, still not so much.

When I was about to leave, Jody told me that she had gotten a letter that am, just about 20 minutes before I got there from a person who had abused her daughter. Talk about shocking and devestating. And Jody went about being a most gracious host. She is amazing....truly. I just love her to pieces and am so grateful for her sweet friendship.

I want to share the gospel with her and her family and will. I am doing it slowly and yesterday shared that so many members of the church are finding the gospel as adults and have, u know, transgressions in their pasts before they find the gospel. When she first agreed to work with me as the commissioner, she said look, u think I'm going to hell and I think the same thing. I think now we have a little better of a working relationship, at least I'd like to think so. I asked her if she had taken her daughter to see their pastor and she said no and I said why? That's what they are for. To have reinforcement that it's not her fault. To get assistance with counseling, which they cannot afford. Geesh, the Lord's plan really is better!

Court of Honor today, it's Scout Sunday and I get to wear pants to church, lol! And I've been asked to speak in another ward on Scouting and how it brings boys closer to the Savior. I'm very excited because I found a talk by the prophet that I'll be using.

Gotta run!
